New 2FM radio documentary Control explores the work of Mariah Carey, Kate Bush, Enya and Sinéad O’Connor as producers and their use of technology to make music

Control is a new radio documentary produced by Kate Butler and narrated by Renn Miano that follows the use of technology in music by women in the 1980s and beyond. The four-episode series will air during The New Music Show with Beta Da Silva (6pm-9pm) at 8:20pm Monday 15 June to Thursday 18 June.

In the 1980s more and more women were using technology to make hit records, in Control Kate Butler sets out to discover if there are less women with producing credits on modern music, and if so, why?

In episodes 1-3, narrator Renn Miano details the journeys of Irish music powerhouses and those with Irish heritage who were producing music in the 80s, focusing on Mariah Carey, Kate Bush, Enya and Sinéad O’Connor.

Co-writers Kate Butler and Renn Miano challenge the suggestion that music technology is exclusive to men in episode 4, sharing the damaging impact this idea may have. Control also details the work activists and allies have put in to try and give women equal opportunity in the recording studio.

The series features a wide range of contributors with experience in all aspects of the music industry including, studio engineer and producer, Gloria Kaba, who has worked on music by Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and professor and author Dr. Rebekah Farrugia, who along with Kate Butler and Renn Miano, help to tell the story of Control.
