RTÉ Statement: Dublin Pride

RTÉ is disappointed with the decision to end a partnership we had developed together with a range of bodies over the last three years. Standing with the LGBTQ+ community, during Pride month sends an important signal that RTÉ is here to serve everyone, and over the last three years RTÉ has sought to include these communities and extend understanding through a range of specially produced content, campaigns and partnerships.

Public discussion – sometimes uncomfortable, difficult, and contentious – is central to RTÉ’s prescribed purpose. RTÉ is acutely aware that discussions on issues such as gender and identity are deeply personal to many. It is important we listen to them, their families and those close to them, and it is also important that we allow our audiences engage with and understand the issues involved.

RTÉ will, consistent with its statutory obligations, respond to any formal complaints concerning the broadcasts.

RTÉ will continue to stand with our LGBTQ+ staff and the wider community during Pride month and beyond. In time, we hope that we will once again get the opportunity to continue to develop our partnership with Dublin Pride.

RTÉ Toy Show Appeal Grants announced with over 1.1 million children and families across Ireland set to benefit

•    All counties to receive grants with 154 charities and community groups securing funding •    €6.6 million was donated by the public last November to help change children’s lives for the better   

The RTÉ Toy Show Appeal and the Community Foundation for Ireland announced today that over 1.1 million children and their families will benefit from donations raised during the 2021 Late Late Toy Show Appeal.  Over a memorable weekend last November, an audience of 1.8 million viewers helped raise over €6.6 million to help change children’s lives for the better. The monies raised will now be used to support the work of registered children’s charities and community groups across the island of Ireland. 154 charities are to receive grants, up from 55 last year, and for the first time, at least one project in every county will benefit.   Over the past number of months charities working at local, regional, and national levels were invited to apply for a grant under three thematic pillars: addressing essential needs from food to medical equipment, improving well-being including hospital and medical care, mental health supports and grief counselling, and creativity and play.  The RTÉ Toy Show Appeal in partnership with the Community Foundation for Ireland has announced today that the following four charities are to receive transformative grants of more than €300,000.   Exchange House Ireland in Limerick promotes equal opportunities for Travellers in areas of health, education, training, accommodation, and enterprise on a nationwide basis.  Baboró International Arts Festival for Children in Galway inspires all children regardless of geographic, economic, physical, intellectual, or cultural status to engage with the creative arts.  Spraoi agus Spórt in Donegal provides affordable and inclusive opportunities, activities and experiences for children, families, young people, and adults.

Parents Plus develops and delivers evidenced-based parenting, mental health, and educational interventions for vulnerable families.  The remainder of the donations will be split amongst 150 charities across the island of Ireland including well-known organisations like the Jack and Jill Foundation, Barnardos, Family Carers Ireland, the ISPCC, the Irish Wheelchair Association, Children’s Books Ireland, ARC Cancer Support Services and Oscars’ Kids Ireland.  Local projects and organisations in every county of Ireland will also receive grants to help with a diverse range of needs including homelessness in Galway, migrant supports in Cork, sexual abuse victims in Carlow, and the mental health of young people in Wicklow to name just a few.  Over £525,000 has been awarded to 14 charities and organisations in Northern Ireland including Kids Together Belfast, Kinship Care Northern Ireland, and Clonmore Youth Club. The full list of organisations can be found here Speaking about the announcement host of The Late Late Show, Ryan Tubridy said: “The Irish public has simply blown us away with their generosity and kindness of spirit. The donations given will enrich the lives of children across our island who need it most to give them the support, care, and encouragement that they need. We were truly overwhelmed with the response.”   Speaking about the impact of the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal, The Late Late Show producers Katherine Drohan and Jane Murphy said: “We are constantly inspired by children and with the unwavering generosity of TV viewers, RTÉ will continue to work to bring the magic of the Toy Show to every child in Ireland in order to change their lives for good”. Director-General of RTÉ, Dee Forbes said: “The Late Late Toy Show is an evening where generations unite, and the country celebrates some incredible and inspirational children. Viewers once again responded to the call to give with extraordinary generosity, and those donations will make an enormous difference to the work of so many organisations. The fact that this money will impact the lives of over 1.1 million children is phenomenal and we are very grateful to everyone who gave, which is what makes all these grants possible”.  Chief Executive of the Community Foundation for Ireland, Denise Charlton said: “Children, parents and amazing organisations are seeing the magic of the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal turned into actions which will transform young lives. From addressing essential needs, improving wellbeing to supporting creativity and play the generosity of television viewers is bringing not only vital support but also colour and joy to children, families and to wider communities. Offering support and benefit to 1.1 million lives is an incredible achievement. It is one which every viewer in every county should be proud of.” The RTÉ Toy Show Appeal is a designated fund to help a range of children’s charities and causes around Ireland, to be managed on RTÉ’s behalf by The Community Foundation for Ireland www.communityfoundation.ie. All of the monies raised are received by The Community Foundation for Ireland who run an open grant round where children’s charities across Ireland are invited to apply for a grant. All grant applications are independently assessed by an expert panel who make a final recommendation for funding.

The Creative Ireland Programme and RTÉ have today announced the winners of the second This Is Art! national competition which celebrates young artists of all abilities.  The winners, below, come from Co. Cork (2), Co Wicklow, Co. Wexford and Co. Mayo and according to the independent panel of judges, the standard of entries was once again extremely high this year, right across the age categories.

Working to the theme, ‘This Is Extraordinary’, almost 2,000 entries were received from young artists of all abilities, aged 18 and under, all over the country who created an original piece of art that will be showcased in an online art gallery for generations to come. In so doing, the competition promotes artistic practice among young people and encourages and supports creativity, originality and self-expression.

Selected works from this year’s entries will feature on billboards across the country and on social media as part of a campaign by The Creative Ireland Programme and RTÉ.

Elizabeth (12 – 15): “This Is Art! 2022 was the first competition I ever entered apart from school and the fact that I won was kind of insane. After I submitted, I looked through the gallery and I got a bit nervous because there were so many really good artists that were absolutely amazing.”
 
Sarah (16 – 18): “ When I heard I got first place, I was thrilled, how out of all of Ireland I won, it’s crazy. I think winning this competition will definitely give me the confidence to just keeping going with my art and I’ll be excited to see where my style goes in the future.”
 
Lottie & Rosie (Group):“We love making mad stuff out of art so it’s really exciting that we won, we were dumbfounded, so excited about it. Art can be anything, it doesn’t have to be paint or what we did in the garden, there’s loads of forms of art and you can use anything for art, it doesn’t have to be a real thing, it can be abstract.”

Amanda Coogan (Visual Artist) on Phoenix’s piece (8 – 11): “This was one of the most extraordinary works I have ever seen made by a young person, the dedication to creating such a wonderful costume that made your protagonist so convincing, I was submerged into the world you had created and as a person from Cork I totally got the connection to the mysticism and otherworldly-ness of your chosen location of Garretstown. Well done, Phoenix. Amazing work.”
 
Tadhg Crowley (Senior Curator, The Glucksman, UCC) on Elizabeth’s piece (12-15): “An absolutely gorgeous painting! Elizabeth demonstrates an incredible level of skill in the way she manages the paint. From the paintbrushes in the jar to the folds on the clothes, the sensitive colouring of the faces and shades of the hair. Really beautiful. This skill is matched by an imaginative and unique interpretation of the self-portrait and makes Elizabeth’s artwork a deserved winner.”
 
Aideen Barry (Visual Artist) on Sarah’s piece (16 – 18):“You look like such an interesting person and it appears to me that art in all its forms is at the centre of your world. Your representation in this weird almost 360 degree lens affect in your painting really kind of captured the idea of living in a fishbowl feeling, which I think we can all relate to during this strange time of pandemic living. Such a wonderful painting, I look forward to seeing much more of your work in the future.”
 
Amanda Coogan (Visual Artist) on Lottie and Rosie’s piece (Group): Lottie and Rosie, I adore your piece. What a brilliant collaboration; making such a fun piece together! I admire how you transferred a drawing on paper into a three-dimensional real-life sculpture. That you used everyday objects and transformed them into a rt and that you both perform in the piece too! Your uncles shed is a treasure trove and hurls are magical! Super congratulations and hope you continue to make more great collaborative works together.

This year marks 100 years since the publication of James Joyce’s peerless modernist classic, Ulysses, and RTÉ will celebrate Bloomsday, June 16th, with a series of broadcasts, articles, and archive clips to mark the occasion, brought to you by RTÉ Drama on One.

The 1982 RTÉ complete dramatisation of Ulysses will be broadcast (for the third successive year) on June 16th and 17th on RTÉ Radio 1 Extra, followed by the first streamed broadcast of all 15 stories from Dubliners, and Joyce’s only extant play Exiles. 

The full dramatised production of Ulysses – originally broadcast in 1982 to celebrate the centenary of Joyce, and totalling 29 hours and 45 minutes in duration – will begin at the same time as both Stephen Dedalus’ and Leopold Bloom’s journey through Dublin begins in the book: 8am on June 16th.

RTÉ AND AMC NETWORKS’ IFC GREENLIGHT NEW ORIGINAL DARK COMEDY SisterS

Irish-Canadian Co-Production Produced by Peer Pressure and Shaftesbury, in Association with Mermade and Gaze Pictures

RTÉ together with AMC Networks’ IFC today announced the greenlight of the new original comedy-drama series, SisterS, created by, written by and starring Emmy Award-nominee Sarah Goldberg (Barry) and Susan Stanley (Hotel Amenities). The series has been in development with Peer Pressure, Shaftesbury, RTÉ and Emmy Award-nominee Declan Lowney (Ted Lasso, Alan Partridge). Lowney is the establishing director and is set to direct the first three episodes of the six episode, half-hour series.

RTÉ continues to be the home of quality Irish drama with filming now underway in Dublin for SisterS, a dark comedy-drama about two women, born continents apart, in Canada and in Ireland, who discover they are half-sisters and embark on a road trip to find their alcoholic father. Real-life best friends Goldberg and Stanley make their writing debuts and star.

An Irish-Canadian co-production, the IFC original series is produced by Peer Pressure and Shaftesbury, in association with Mermade and Gaze Pictures. AMC Networks’ IFC and streaming service Sundance Now hold the US rights to the series, Crave in Canada, and RTÉ in Ireland. Fremantle will distribute the series in all other territories. Filming is currently underway on location in Ireland, continuing through June 28, 2022, with the support of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Co-creators and co-stars, Sarah Goldberg and Susan Stanley said, “We are thrilled to be making SisterS, a character-driven comedic drama about how the absence of a parent in childhood can affect life in your thirties, and the macabre humour that can come with trauma.”

BBC, RTÉ, CHANNEL 4, FRANCE TÉLÉVISION AND SKY ARTS AMONG WINNERS AT CELTIC MEDIA FESTIVAL DAY 3

Dungloe in Ireland announced as venue for the 44th Celtic Media Festival in 2023

The Celtic Media Festival – The International Summit of Screen and Sound, drew to a close tonight as the final Torc Awards for Excellence were announced. France 3 Bretagne took home the coveted award in Single Documentary with Dañsal dindan ar glav, which tells the moving and personal story of Hélène, a cancer survivor. In Drama Series, BBC 1’s tense six part Vigil took home the award while in the Radio Presenter of Year category Michelle Nic Grianna from RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta won.

The winner of the International Pitching Forum – with a fantastic development prize of £10,000 – was also announced this evening. Dhivya Kate Chetty, Banoyi Films wowed the judges with her pitch for The Crossing; an observational documentary (series) charting the ordinary and extraordinary stories; the comings and goings; too-ings and fro-ings on the ferry crossings between Liverpool & Dublin, and Liverpool & Belfast.

The final Torc Award for Excellence was the highly anticipated Spirit of the Festival award which went to BBC ALBA’s Afro-Gàidheil. An intimate portrayal of identity, the viewer is taken on a journey by singer Cass Ezeji to meet Gaelic speakers of African heritage as she tries to find her place in a culture where she rarely sees herself represented.

Closing off the evening was the announcement of Dungloe in Ireland as the venue for the 44th Celtic Media Festival in 2023.

Catriona Logan, Festival Director, said: “This has been a really special Celtic Media Festival as it’s the first one we’ve been able to do in person since 2019. The spirit of the Celtic Nations and Regions is as strong as ever, with Breton drama Fin Ar Bed 2 (At The End Of The World) striking a world distribution deal during the festival which is fantastic. Winner ‘Ex Static’ to get final spot at Junk Kouture World Final

Ex Static by Zuzanna Cieslewicz from Old Bawn Community School, Tallaght, voted RTÉ Wild Card

Zuzanna Cieslewicz’s design, ‘Ex Static’ has been voted RTÉ Wild Card by the public and will now go on to take the final spot at the Junk Kouture World Final in Abu Dhabi later this year. The RTÉ Wild Card was announced today on the Tracy Clifford Show on 2FM after weeks of online voting on www.rte.ie/junkkouture.

Ex-Static was among five wild cards shortlisted by the Junk Kouture judges – Louis Walsh, Roz Purcell, Soulé and Stephen McLaughlin – one from each of the five regions, each with its own inspiration and story. The five RTÉ Wild Cards were revealed on rte.ie/junkkouture on Thursday 19 May, following the Junk Kouture TV Highlights Programme on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player, when voting opened to the public. As the RTÉ Wild Card, Zuzanna’s design becomes the 10th design to represent Ireland at the World Final.

Junk Kouture Powered by RTÉ is not just about sustainability and great design, it’s also about the people who take part, the inspiration behind the designs and being empowered through creativity.

Commenting on her winning design, Zuzanna, who is a student at Old Bawn Community School, Tallaght, Co. Dublin, said: “My design is inspired by a tech-gothic style. The shiny plastics, black garbage bags and wires reminded me of old, broken or abandoned tech, so I decided for my headpiece to be an old tv. I added gothic style features for detailing and as I thought the black colour would suit the “trash” part of my outfit. My design is made from plastic trash bags, grocery store fruit bags, old insulation foam cardboard, old tape and string. I used different crochet techniques for detail pieces, crocheting the gloves and corset accessories. I used the double crochet and slip stich techniques in my design. I used the spare wires we had in school and wire scraps from my personal art projects to not be wasteful. I also decided to use household items to limit waste.”

In Junk Kouture Dublin City Final 2022 TV Highlights, 60 haute-couture designs made from 100% recycled material created and modelled by talented young designers aged 13-18 from post-primary schools around the island of Ireland who battle it out as they make their bid to be chosen for the first ever Junk Kouture World Final later in 2022. THE TOMMY TIERNAN SHOW WINS IN BEST ENTERTAINMENT CATEGORY AT THE CELTIC MEDIA FESTIVAL IN BRITTANY

The first of this year’s prestigious Torc Awards for Excellence were announced yesterday at Celtic Media Festival, The International Summit of Sound and Screen in Quimper, Brittany.

Alongside winners from S4C, BBC Two and BBC Radio Cymru, RTÉ’s The Tommy Tiernan Show took the Torc Award for Best Entertainment.

Catriona Logan, Festival Director, said: “Congratulations to all the winners of today’s Torc Awards for Excellence. We are so happy to be welcoming everybody back for our first in person summit since 2019. We have a packed programme of events in store, and look forward to another successful Celtic Media Festival.”

Oscar-nominated actor Ciarán Hinds narrating brand-new children’s podcast series for RTÉjr Radio

The Neighbourhood links stories about the kindness and bravery children can find in themselves The Neighbourhood, a new podcast series from RTÉjr Radio, features the distinctive tones of acclaimed actor Ciarán Hinds as narrator. The nine-part series for younger children, centres around a group of kids whose neighbourhood is their kingdom, a leafy place of play and imagination.

Throughout the series, the narrator (Hinds) gives us stories about kindness and bravery that children find in themselves. In episode one, entitled Mr Potts is No Longer Afraid, listeners hear the story of Nettie. Nettie is content in her own company, too content, perhaps. She likes to draw in the allotments at the back of her house. She befriends old man Potts, a widower, who may or may not be keeping an elephant…

The Neighbourhood is written by playwright and novelist Philip Davison, and this is the first work that Davison has written for children. The series is produced by radio maker and teacher, Brian Kenny.

Nicky Coghlan, Producer RTÉjr Radio, said: “We’re delighted that an actor as fine as Ciarán has taken part in a show with RTÉjr Radio. His voice and delivery have helped create fairly magical little stories that feel utterly timeless. This is also the first time Philip Davison has written for children and it’s clear he’s channeling the childhood we all wish we had.”

Ciarán Hinds said: “My friend from a long time ago, Philip Davison, wrote these stories for kids and he asked me if I might be interested in recording them for the radio. I read them and they were really touching and quirky, so I recorded them , and today I’ve come back to read one of them live to a group of seven-year-olds!”

All 9 stories are available now via all podcast platforms.

No one knows the neighbourhood better than the animals and children. The neighbourhood is a leafy suburb with redbrick houses and gardens of every sort, but it’s also a place without boundaries.
