RTÉ proudly partners with ARTE, the European culture channel, on Sunday 6 June for Beethoven – The European Tour: Nine Symphonies, Nine Cities, a broadcast of all nine Beethoven symphonies from nine European cities which includes the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor Jaime Martín performing the Second Symphony and the Coriolan Overture at the National Concert Hall. The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s performance, presented by Mary Kennedy, will be broadcast on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player on Sunday 6 June at 2.10pm to coincide with its broadcast on ARTE Concert online and on RTE lyric fm on Friday 18 June at 7pm.
This major celebration of Beethoven in the wake of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth in 2020 is a collaborative project by ARTE together with its European public partner channels. It features leading orchestras including the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Harding, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra with its new chief conductor Nicholas Collon and the Wiener Symphoniker conducted by Karina Canellakis. RTE’s participation is part of an ongoing partnership with ARTE which includes the co-production of documentary projects for television, the co-production of Irish arts events for ARTE’s digital performance platform ARTE Concert and a content exchange programme. Starting at 1pm on Sunday, 6 June 2021 and running until 10.30pm (CET), ARTE Concert will take audiences online for all nine Beethoven symphonies performed in chronological order – seven of them live – from nine major venues all over Europe in Bonn, Dublin, Helsinki, Luxembourg, Prague, Lake Lugano, Delphi, Strasbourg and Vienna.

ARTE’s public partner channels for Beethoven – The European Tour. Nine Symphonies, Nine Cities are ZDF, WDR, RTÉ, YLE, CT, SRG, ORF and Film Fund Luxembourg. After the live broadcast on 6 June the concerts will remain online until 6 December 2021 for viewers to replay as and when they wish.
