RTÉ’s Today show celebrates 2000 episodes
All three presenters, Maura, Dáithí and Sinead, celebrate as afternoon chat show filmed in Cork hits milestone.
Ireland’s longest running afternoon show, the Today show, reaches a landmark 2000 episodes when it broadcasts live at 3.30pm today, Tuesday 24 March, on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
To celebrate, all three presenters Maura Derrane, Dáithí Ó Sé and Sinead Kennedy will host the programme live from RTÉ Cork studios. This will be the first time all three presenters have hosted the show together.
Maura Derrane and Dáithí Ó Sé started on Today on 1 November 2012 and were joined by presenter Sinéad Kennedy in September 2020. The programme has gone through some major changes through the years from new sets, hundreds of contributors and many fantastic guests.
Director General of RTÉ Kevin Bakhurst congratulated the show on its achievement: “I’d like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in Today over the years. The programme continues to engage and entertain audiences across Ireland – for many it is valued company during the afternoon. The show also consistently attracts really positive engagement on social media, which has extended the show’s audience beyond the schedule. The creativity, energy and commitment from everyone involved has inspired our plans to produce more great programmes from Cork and around Ireland”.
Head of RTÉ Cork Colm Crowley said: “I am so proud of the Today show and the talented teams – past and present – that have made it an audience favourite and a central part of RTÉ’s TV schedule. A central part of this success story is the shared understanding among everyone involved that it is a privilege to be invited into people’s living rooms every afternoon — a privilege we never take for granted. As RTÉ expands its regional presence in the years ahead, the Today show stands as proof of what can be built outside Dublin when creativity, necessity and ambition meet. A programme born during a financial crash has become one of the most enduring and beloved parts of RTÉ’s output — and shows no sign of slowing down.”
On today’s celebration programme, one of the show’s original chefs Kevin Dundon will make a celebration cake to mark the 2000 episodes. Kevin will also cook the very first recipe he made on the show 14 years ago. Friend of the show Fiona Looney will present an archival history of daytime TV going way back into the archives to show clips from Today show predecessors Live at Three, Open House and of course the early years of the Today show.
Watch the Today show weekdays at 3.30pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
