RTÉ presents Tradfluencer – The Sharon Shannon Story, a television documentary exploring the life and career of acclaimed musician Sharon Shannon and her lasting impact on Irish traditional music. Over a career spanning almost forty years, Sharon Shannon has played a central role in bringing traditional Irish music to new audiences, both at home and internationally.
Featuring live performances, interviews and behind-the-scenes access, Tradfluencer – The Sharon Shannon Story traces Sharon’s journey from her upbringing in rural County Clare to performances on stages around the world. The documentary reflects on key moments in her career, including her time with The Waterboys, the success of her 1991 self-titled debut album, her involvement in A Woman’s Heart, and the international success of Galway Girl.
Speaking about the documentary Sharon said: “It’s been a nostalgic and moving trip down memory lane looking back on my life and career for this documentary. Music has brought me huge joy throughout my life, and I’ve loved sharing the tunes with audiences worldwide. I’m so grateful to all the musicians and singers who have collaborated with me over the years, and I loved getting together with many of them while filming the documentary. I’m so excited for audiences to see the film and I hope they enjoy the music.”
Friends and collaborators contribute throughout the film, offering insight into Sharon’s work and influence including Adam Clayton, Imelda May, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Mike Scott, Paul Brady, Steve Earle, Francis Black, Dónal Lunny, Mary Coughlan, Lisa Canny and Mundy, each sharing their perspective on her musicianship and approach to collaboration.
The documentary also explores Sharon Shannon’s personal story. Speaking with openness, she reflects on experiences of loss, her ongoing experience of anxiety, her sense of difference growing up, and the importance of music as a constant throughout her life. Away from the stage, the film captures her strong connection to animals and home life.
Tradfluencer – The Sharon Shannon Story examines the challenges of building a sustained career in traditional music, particularly as a female instrumentalist, and situates Sharon’s achievements within the broader landscape of Irish music over the past four decades.
