WATCH HERE: The Disconnect – RTÉ Player (rte.ie)
From the award-winning team behind RTÉ Player Original I’m Fine. The Disconnect takes a look at the societal changes young people in Ireland are facing as social media becomes the centre of communication and expression. It asks, “How do they feel about the changing expectations of their image, abilities and interactions?”. The series asks these questions and more to a group of young Irish people who have grown up in a world where a phone is considered almost as important as food or water.
EP 1 – Overwhelmed
Where does the benefit of social media use begin and where does it end among the many hours of scrolling and typing? We hear some different perspectives on the way social media and phones have made their way into the centre of modern social life, and the impact this can have.
EP 2 – The Replacement
How has communication changed in an era of instant messaging and social media posts? It seems that most in-person interaction is replaceable by a few quick taps on the phone. As social anxiety and isolation kick in, this episode explores the effect social media has on our mental health and wellbeing.
EP 3 – Reconnecting
How do we create healthier social lives in an evolving social media climate? In this episode, we hear about the boundaries that are necessary to handle our perception of real life versus the online world.
