RTÉ Drama On One scores at Prix Marulić with Marconi & Me by Zoë Comyns
Drama On One’s Marconi & Me by Zoë Comyns took third prize in the Drama category of the 26th Prix Marulić at last week’s ceremony on Hvar island in Croatia.
The festival theme of ‘Old texts revisited’ invites entries in the categories of Drama, Documentary and Short Form, with each entry featuring an adaptation or interpretation of any text pre-dating 1953.
Of 83 entries from 28 countries, 44 programmes were chosen for the festival. Each of these were heard in outdoor listening sessions on the island – the ambient listening is a hallmark of the Prix Marulić. An international jury led by Soila Valkama and Jean-Claude Kuner selected the winning entries. The awards ceremony was held in the island’s 17th century Theatre of Hvar on Wednesday last, 31st May.
Marconi & Me was first aired on Radio 1 Extra and RTÉ Drama On One in April 2022. The piece is written by Zoë Comyns and produced by Zoë with Kevin Brew, with sound design by Damian Chennells, Brendan Rehill and Brendan Jenkinson. The text is performed by Zoë Comyns and José Miguel Jiménez.
Marconi & Me takes its starting point the Marconi Code Books produced in 1919 to enable more efficient communications in maritime trade. A podcaster discovers the books and weaves them into her life story. The innovative drama charts a crumbling relationship from its origins, via a history of sound, telegraphy and communication, Marconi’s telegraphic work in Ireland, and a flight into family madness.
Marconi & Me was funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland Sound & Vision Fund with the Television Licence Fee.
