RTÉ publishes Register of External Activities for the second quarter of 2024

RTÉ is today publishing a statistical summary from the Register of External Activities for the second quarter of 2024.

The RTÉ Register of External Activities (‘the Register’) commenced on 01 February 2024 and the publication for Q2 comprises the months April, May and June 2024.

Statistical summary

Total Number of approved activities: 106

Breakdown of activities within each payment band:

  • 50%: No Payment/no benefit
  • 29%: €1 – €1,000:
  • 15%: €1,001 – €5,000
  • 6%:    €5,001 – €10,000
  • 0%:    Over €10,000

RTÉ Director-General, Kevin Bakhurst said:  “Today marks the publication of summary details from the Q2 Register of External Activities across the 5 editorial divisions in RTÉ covered by the register. This is in keeping with my commitment to ensure RTÉ provides greater transparency around external activities. It was intended to publish greater detail but as RTÉ outlined with the Q1 publication, the Data Protection Commission was firmly of the view that specific legislative authority is required to publish the level of detail originally intended. It is notable that, once again, half of all approved activities did not involve any payment or benefit. These are events where those working with RTÉ give freely of their time for charitable, sporting, community, academic and social reasons. This register, along with other reforms introduced has marked significant change in RTÉ and I once again want to thank all those, staff and contractors, who have fully co-operated with this process.”

ENDS

Explanatory Note:

RTÉ will not be releasing any further information from the Register of External Activities, beyond that in the statistical summary above.

RTÉ previously detailed the outcome of consultations with the office of the Data Protection Commission (DPC).

RTÉ initially planned to publish summary details in the following format:

  • the name of the person who received approval
  • a brief description of the activity approved
  • the relevant payment band for each activity approved.

The Data Protection Commission has advised RTÉ that in order to publish a public register containing this level of detail, specific legal underpinning in the form of primary or secondary legislation will be required.

The Commission also advised it would invoke its statutory powers, if publication of the kind outlined above was proposed, in the absence of appropriate legislation. RTÉ has written to Department outlining this position and requesting the relevant legislation to allow for the kind of publication originally intended.

In the interim, the DPC has confirmed to RTÉ that it has no objection to the creation and compilation of the Register of External Activities for internal management purposes. Also pending legislation, the DPC has not raised concerns with a proposal from RTÉ to release a statistical summary of information from the Register on a quarterly basis.

It is important to understand the scope of the Register of External Activities in terms of the activities that are included:

  • The Register covers the five main editorial divisions of RTÉ: News and Current Affairs, Sport, Content (TV), Radio 1 and Raidío na Gealtachta and RTÉ 2FM/Lyric fm/Gold.
  • In each division, a group of senior line managers decides whether to approve or not approve an application to engage in an external activity.

  • The core consideration in determining whether or not to approve is centred on RTÉ’s obligation under the broadcasting legislation for impartiality.

  • Clearly, the requirements in respect of impartiality are more stringent in the areas of news and current affairs.

  • External activities are typically ‘once-off’ activities, such as to MC an event, launching an event or product, speaking at a conference, etc.

  • There are people working with RTÉ who have ongoing business interests which may involve a commercial relationship with a particular brand or entity and as part of which the person engages in a range of events/activities throughout the year.

  • Individuals who come within this category have a legal and legitimate right to earn an outside income and ongoing commercial arrangements in this category do not necessarily constitute a ‘once-off’ external activity.

  • The Q2 Register of External Activities includes summary details of activities approved by line management. The detail gathered includes the name of person granted approval, the relevant RTÉ division, the date of the activity, a brief description of the activity and the relevant band of payment or where appropriate, no payment.

The Register of External Activities is but one part of governance reforms in RTÉ and a separate RTÉ Register of Interests and Gifts Register has also been put in place.

Maddie + Triggs begins Monday 21st October

Brand new series Maddie +Triggs premieres on Monday 21st October at 11.10am on RTÉjr. 15 episodes will drop on RTÉ Player at the same time.

The series follows a 7-year-old girl, Maddie, who just so happens to have a visual impairment, and her doggy best friend Triggs, as they find music and adventure in the sounds of the everyday by really listening to the world around them.

The family and preschool age show was created by Turnip + Duck, an award-winning studio based in the Republic of Ireland.

Each episode features an original song and rich immersive sound design designed to be engaged with by audiences with visual impairments. Being developed as audio first content, with the first 15 episodes initially released as an award-winning podcast in 2021, means the show is fully accessible even if you can’t see it. Maddie + Triggs will also air on BBC Sounds and RTÉ Radio Player as a podcast series.

The show was built around five core pillars: accessibility, representation, education, empowerment, and collaboration.

The creators’ mission was to create a show whereby if two children, one sighted and one vision impaired, sat down side by side to engage with the show, neither would have a lesser experience. They worked with blind and vision impairment organisations, as well as software developers to establish a visual aesthetic that maximises the accessibility of the content.

The show features new talent in front of and behind camera, including Bonnie O’Meara, the visually impaired star of the show who plays the role of Maddie. The series is narrated by Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls, The Great Pottery Throw Down).

The series also had a team of 5 blind and vision impaired writers, and the production company has run educational programs with National Talent Academy for Animation to support emerging diverse voices with disabilities.

● Producers: Turnip + Duck, in association with Sun & Moon

● Stakeholders: BBC (CBeebies), RTE (RTÉjr), Mediawan Kids & Family, Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán

● Affiliated Organisations: Vision Ireland (formerly NCBI), Angel Eyes

● Additional Support: Cultural & Creative Industries Skillnet, The National Talent Academy for Animation (NTAA), Animation Ireland

Watch the new series from Monday 21st October at 11.10am on RTÉjr

Joe Duffy returns with the 18th season of ‘The Meaning of Life’

Guests include Sinéad Burke, Bryan Dobson, Sonia O’Sullivan, Ricky Tomlinson, David Norris, Catherine Joyce Collins, Ronan Tynan, Olwen Fouéré, Fintan O’Toole and Mary McEvoy

Joe Duffy returns this Sunday with a new series of The Meaning of Life in which public and influential figures reveal how their lives have shaped, or been shaped by, their experiences, choices, values and beliefs.

Season 18 launches with an extended 35-minute special episode, as Joe sits down with CEO of Tilting the Lens, disability advocate and accessibility consultant, Sinéad Burke.

Sinéad has highlighted the lack of inclusivity within the fashion and design industries, but refuses to be a fashion victim, consulting with industry leaders, designers, retailers and magazine editors to ensure that clothes made for, with and by disabled people are visibly embedded in their business models.

She talks candidly about love in its many forms, revealing the source of her own drive and ambition and the challenges she faces navigating the world as a little person, in a career that has taken her from a teaching role to the cover of Vogue and the Obamas’ White House.

This season, Joe also speaks with former RTÉ broadcaster and journalist, Bryan Dobson; the legendary World Champion and Olympic silver medal-winning athlete Sonia O’Sullivan; popular British actor Ricky Tomlinson; former Senator, scholar and civil rights activist David Norris; Travellers’ rights activist Catherine Joyce Collins; Irish tenor and gold medal winning para-athlete Ronan Tynan; actor and theatre director Olwen Fouéré; journalist, writer and drama critic Fintan O’Toole and actor, writer and farmer Mary McEvoy.

Commenting on the series, his fifth in the Inquisitor’s chair, Joe Duffy said: “Make no mistake, The Meaning of Life is a deeply researched, heavily thought-through recorded interview programme that befits the title and the subject. I am proud to present it with such strong professional backing from a great team.”

Roger Childs, Commissioning Editor of Religious Content at RTÉ said: “Ever since Gay Byrne sat down to interview our first guest the late, great Sinéad O’Connor, on a cold January day in 2009, The Meaning of Life has captivated audiences, revealing different sides and depths to public figures from all walks of life. Five years after Gay’s sad death, Joe Duffy has made the series his own and we’re delighted that it continues to attract such diverse and interesting guests to sit in ‘the chair opposite.’”

The Meaning of Life airs on Sundays at 22:30 on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player, from October 20.

RTÉ Player debuts new original sitcom Good Boy exploring comedy, career and coming to terms with ADHD

RTÉ Player debuts new original sitcom Good Boy exploring comedy, career and coming to terms with ADHD

Stream All Episodes from Wednesday, October 16

RTÉ Player this week debuts a brand-new original sitcom, Good Boy, a fresh and hilarious take on navigating comedy, career, and self-discovery.

Starring comedian and social media sensation Tony Cantwell, Good Boy follows the personal and professional adventures of a thirty-something aspiring comedian juggling a day job he loathes, a tumultuous love life, and a mounting drive to make a name for himself in comedy. At the core of this story is Good Boy’s journey toward an ADHD diagnosis—a quest which turns out to be emotional, heartfelt and very amusing.

Good Boy is trying to crack the comedy code by diving into social media trends in pursuit of viral fame, only to encounter frustration at every turn. His story takes an unexpected twist when he begins the lengthy and surreal process of securing an ADHD diagnosis, a journey that challenges him but proves heartwarming and transformative.

Written by Tony Cantwell and Hannah Mamalis, and directed by Fergal Costello, Good Boy is inspired by Cantwell’s real-life experiences. Since learning of his ADHD diagnosis last year, Tony Cantwell has embraced a new outlook on life, which served as the creative springboard for the series. Good Boy is a funny, authentic reflection on choice paralysis, the pressure of modern self-promotion, and the balance between ambition and acceptance.

Tony Cantwell said: “I’m so proud of this show and grateful to RTÉ for encouraging us to create something so unique and authentic. It’s really funny, with some of Ireland’s most hilarious people involved, and though it’s a personal story, I believe it will resonate with anyone who’s ever been so paralysed by all of life’s choices, that they felt they had no choices at all.”

Good Boy was produced in-house by The Lab production unit. The series joins nearly 5,000 hours of diverse on-demand content available on RTÉ Player, which also offers an extensive library of premium drama boxsets, docuseries, and exclusive live sports and entertainment.

All episodes of Good Boy premiere Wednesday, October 16, exclusively on RTÉ Player.

RTÉ airs compelling new documentary ‘Anorexia, My Family & Me’

A powerful, new television programme on eating disorders entitled Anorexia, My Family & Me will air tonight at 9:35pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.

The compelling documentary is narrated by Angela Scanlon, who herself has overcome the challenges of an eating disorder. Produced by the team behind the sensitive and deeply moving Patrick: A Young Traveller Lost, this documentary delves into the lives of Irish families grappling with the profound effects of anorexia.

With cases of eating disorders in Ireland on the rise this urgent documentary contains unprecedented access to unfolding stories, presenting the raw and emotional experiences of families across the country. We meet 16-year-old Josh, 42-year-old dad of four Sean, 36-year-old Amanda and their families who offer a personal look at the realities of living with this most fatal of mental health conditions.

We meet a Wicklow based mum Jenny fighting tirelessly to secure treatment for her 16-year-old son, Josh, who is consistently losing weight as he battles the devastating grip of anorexia.

Speaking about his eating disorder Josh explains, “It’s just very dangerous. Everything in your body that makes it tick could start to drop. And if some of them drop too low, it’s very big, fatal risks that can come with it. I’m feeling pretty scared and disappointed in myself because I feel like I was the one who let this happen.”

During the course of the documentary viewers will see Josh hospitalized for 67 days before he is discharged to the family home. His mum Jenny says: “No amount of almost begging at that stage to get Josh to eat was working and I couldn’t get in there, you know, get into whatever was starting to build up around Josh. I couldn’t get in. I never thought that anorexia would come into our home. I had no idea what was going to happen.”
Josh describes his hospital stay, “I needed to go into the hospital to try and just help with getting myself back into a healthier place. Physically, I probably wouldn’t have lasted too much longer. In one day, I would probably have collapsed seven times. I would have massive gaps in my memory and I would have like, no ability to move. Sometimes, like, I believe that it’s good to try and eat to get better, but there’s still a part of me that’s being dragged down like, no, it’s not. And so I do still feel very conflicted and being pulled at both ends to try to eat or not.”

Josh’s mum Jenny articulates her worries for Josh and his two sisters: “There’s a definite feeling that you’re headed to battle most days. None of this is sustainable. Like, we have no idea what this malnutrition has done to Josh’s brain. I worry that the girls are so deeply affected by this, that it could result in one of them getting an eating disorder, both of them getting an eating disorder. Mental health services are so stretched that they just can’t help every child. It’s so difficult to get into the service because there’s so many children who are trying to get in. Had Josh gotten into the service sooner, would we be here? I don’t know.”

Busting commonly held misconceptions around those who suffer from the condition we meet 42-year-old father of four Sean from Swords has battled anorexia for over a decade. His struggle with the disorder, including an addiction to running, nearly consumed him before he found the lifesaving help he desperately needed. We follow his tentative steps in his recovery journey.

Sean says, “I don’t remember when I could last wear my wedding ring on my wedding finger. Over the years, it became so loose that it would fall off. It’s closure in a way that I’m going to wear this wedding ring. It’s another big step for me in recovery. Even since I’ve started recovery and I know I do look better and I have put on weight, people still look at you and think, oh, he’s great. Look, he’s doing well, you’re doing well, but they don’t know what’s going on inside your head.”

Sean explains how he became addicted to running, “I could have been out any night running and drop dead. I was just completely gone. Walking upstairs was tough. Very light headed all the time. Memory gone. In so much hunger pain. You run more. You want to be nothing. You want to just be as thin. It’s because you just want to disappear. Because you don’t believe that you are worthy.”

We also follow 36-year-old Amanda and her mother Doreen. Suffering with the condition for over a decade, we are on Amanda’s shoulder as she lives with the constant debilitating daily reality of anorexia. Her condition is so entrenched that she is often on the verge of hospitalisation, offering a stark reminder of the life-threatening nature of the disorder.

Amanda admits, “Doctors have told me that I’m going to die if this continues.”

In one scene viewers watch Amanda struggle to drink a food supplement. She says, “Just my head, just like. Even though it’s like small looks. Only small. you feel kind of guilty for having it? Because your head is telling you that you’re already fat and you don’t need it. You don’t need extra calories and you don’t. So yeah, just an argument in my head all time.”

Amanda’s mother Doreen worries about her collapsing in her bedroom “I look at her sometimes I think she doesn’t look well, but then I don’t open my mouth to her. If I say anything she’ll get annoyed. You know she’d (say), there’s nothing wrong with me. What do you do from there? You know. Like it is sad. Don’t get me wrong. I’d be brokenhearted over her. I just want her to get better. I don’t want to get upset because I don’t want to upset her. but that’s just the way it is. Whatever happened to her I want it to go away and give who she was back to us.”

Amanda recounts a hospital stay earlier this year, “The psychiatrist asked me if I would come to hospital to be medically stabilized, because I was having a lot of hypoglycemic attacks, and it was getting really difficult to manage my blood sugars. They told me there was no way that I was leaving the hospital that day. And you will die if you go home if you try and leave this hospital. We will legally keep you here. Before I knew it, I was detained there at the hospital, against my will. I would end up being physically restrained. I was being set against my will. I just felt like a wild animal. I fought for those doctors with every piece of me I was sedated so many times because I was so distressed. Everybody in the hospital had to do what they had to do to keep me alive. Sometimes part of me that thinks back to that time, I think, I wish they didn’t save me. I wish they had let me die.”

Anorexia, My Family & Me features insights from leading experts in the field. Dr. Kielty Oberlin and Harriet Parsons from Bodywhys: The Eating Disorders Association of Ireland, provide a wider perspective on the issue, unpacking for the audience both the complexity of this illness, and the struggles families face when trying to access care for their loved ones. They explore the systemic barriers that make it so difficult for many to get the treatment they need, but their insight into potential treatments offers hope that recovery is possible with the right support.

This documentary strikes at the heart of the issue, shining a light on the real-life emotional toll eating disorders take on individuals and their families while offering hope and raising awareness.
