Jump into summer with RTÉ this June Bank Holiday weekend, with a bumper offering of entertainment. The country will be alive with sport, music and festivals, and RTÉ will bring you to the heart of the action across RTÉ One, RTÉ2, RTÉ Player and all RTÉ Radio stations.

The bank holiday weekend kicks off in earnest from Thursday 30 May as RTÉ returns to the Phoenix Park for Bloom by Bord Bia. Marty Whelan begins RTÉ’s full five-day schedule from the festival at 10.00am on lyric fm, with great live music, chat and special guests until noon. Then at 7.00pm on RTÉ One & RTÉ Player, Áine Lawlor and Marty Morrissey will capture the atmosphere of the first day of the festival, from the show gardens on display to the best from the food village. Throughout the weekend, RTÉ has something for everyone at the festival, bringing great music, chat and live shows from RTÉ lyric fm favourites; magic and fun from RTÉjr and RTÉ Kids at the Budding Bloomers Stage; Countrywide live on RTÉ Radio 1; regular live RTÉ Weather updates, and much more (full schedule below).

RTÉ’s Summer of Sport continues with an action-packed bank holiday weekend of live sport. Friday 31 May sees presenter Marie Crowe alongside Áine O’Gorman and Lisa Fallon for live coverage on RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player of the Republic of Ireland v Sweden Women’s Euro 2025 Qualifier from the Aviva Stadium (7.00pm).

Saturday 1 June kicks off with Munster’s crucial URC derby with Ulster live from Thomond Park (5.15pm, RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player) followed by the Champions League Final between Dortmund and Real Madrid live from Wembley (7.15pm, RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player) when Joanne Cantwell will be joined by Richie Sadlier and Shay Given. Later on Saturday night, also on RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player (10.50pm), Damian Lawlor and guests will have highlights and analysis of all the day’s GAA Championship action on The Saturday Game. 

Sunday 2 June sees a live double-header of GAA Football Championship games on The Sunday Game Live (1.30pm, RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player) presented by Joanne Cantwell with Meath v Kerry from Navan (2.00pm) followed by Derry v Armagh from Derry (4.00pm) while on Sunday evening Jacqui Hurley and guests will take a look back at the weekend’s action on The Sunday Game (9.30pm, RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player).

Dive into history on Sunday evening, with the first episode of Invasion: The Normans (6.30pm on RTÉ One & RTÉ Player), a documentary series exploring the 12th-century Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland, combining stunning location footage, atmospheric drama re-enactments, and vivid modern-day sequences.

On Bank Holiday Monday, celebrate the original Irish guitar hero with Rory Gallagher: Calling Card (6.30pm, RTÉ One & RTÉ Player). Featuring rare, never-before-seen archive and interviews with Rory’s closest friends and family alongside musical legends including Johnny Marr, Brian May and Bob Geldof, this is the definitive portrait of one of the greatest musicians ever to emerge from Ireland. Later that evening, Against the Head (8.00pm, RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player) will have highlights and analysis of the weekend’s rugby action.

The long weekend rounds out with a double-header of live international soccer. First up it’s the Women’s Euro 2025 Qualifier between Sweden and Republic of Ireland from Stockholm (5.00pm, RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player) followed by the men’s friendly between the Republic of Ireland v Hungary from the Aviva Stadium (7.30pm, RTÉ2 & RTÉ Player).

There are also plenty of boxsets to stream on RTÉ Player, from both seasons of The Dry to the Player Original Charleen and Ellie Go All In, and plenty of music, sport and chat to enjoy on RTÉ Radio across the bank holiday weekend.

On RTÉ Radio 1 on Monday, The Marty Morrissey Show will raise the spirits with conversation, music and entertainment from 9.00am. Vincent Woods gets to know the coastline, people and nature of County Antrim on The County Measure at 11.00am. The guest for Louise Duffy’s Studio Sessions at 12.00pm is Richard Hawley who will talk about his songwriting, musical influences and perform some of his favourite songs. In Services Ahead at 1.30pm, Brenda Donohue spends 24 hours in the Circle K Service Station near Gorey, off the M11 where people stop for all sorts of reasons – petrol, a coffee, a chat. Wildtrack at 2.00pm celebrates June with a free-flowing montage of speech, sounds and music. The RTÉ Concert Orchestra Presents a Queen Symphonic Rock Spectacular at 2.15pm, while at 3.00pm, in a Nature on One special, biologist Terry Flanagan covers a diverse range of topics from the prospect of recreating dinosaurs to the benefits of poo. Fiachna Ó Braonáin sits down with Mike Scott of The Waterboys at 4.00pm to talk about how they made This is the Sea, almost four decades on from its release.

On Saturday and Sunday, Graham Smyth will feature the music of the 2FM Rising artists performing at Forbidden Fruit Festival (RTÉ 2FM, 3.00pm-6.00pm), kicking off his show with two hours of hits and festival favourites from the acts playing on stage, before diving into a mix of current and classic dance tracks for the final hour. On Bank Holiday Monday, the theme on RTÉ 2FM will be Summer Anthems, bringing you the best tunes to get in the summer spirit. Dan Hegarty will also present a special on the highly anticipated Irish debut albums released so far this year. From Sprints to NewDad, Conchur White to Sick Love, it’s been a vintage year already, and Dan will bring us an hour of tracks, interviews and sessions.

On RTÉ lyric fm, favourites Marty Whelan, Niall Carroll, Lorcan Murray, Simon Delaney and Evelyn Grant will all broadcast live from Bloom at the Phoenix Park, and Liz Nolan will offer an immersive podcast of classical favourites, Walk in Beauty, that visitors can access on rte.ie and the RTÉ Radio Player via a unique QR code on site.

Rory Gallagher: Calling Card

Rory Gallagher was the original Irish guitar hero, whose artistry with a battered ’61 Stratocaster became the stuff of legend. Bob Dylan and Muddy Waters admired him, the Rolling Stones tried to hire him – and his fans worshipped him. Clad in faded denim and a checked shirt, he sold 30 million records and became a charismatic icon of Irish music, inspiring musicians such as Brian May, The Edge, Slash and Johnny Marr.

But away from the stage, Rory was an intensely private man. His closest confidante was his brother Dónal who accompanied Rory on his rise from their childhood Everly Brothers stage performances and the Showband scene across the North and South of the Irish border through to the deafening heart of the ‘70s rock scene in London – and far beyond. Now, Dónal, along with insights from Rory’s friends and admirers, takes us on a musical journey through the life and career of this shy guitar hero to better understand what made him so great.

RTÉ 2FM today announced that Jennifer Zamperelli is to hang up the mic on her daily show.

Jennifer has presented her own show from 9-12pm weekdays on RTÉ 2FM since May 2019. She joined the station in February 2014 on Breakfast Republic.

Jennifer Zamparelli said: “I have been working in 2FM for 10 amazing years and now it’s time for me to move on. It has been a really difficult decision to make as I love my team, and of course chatting to you guys (the listeners) every morning. From the early starts on Breakfast Republic all those years ago, to opening up the phone lines again from 9-12pm, I have loved every minute. Within this time I have gotten married and had two kids and now I feel it’s their time. Florence and Enzo are growing up so fast it’s scary and I really feel now is the time to give them a little more of me, so I won’t be returning to my daily radio show.”

Jennifer paid tribute to the team who have worked with her through her ten years at RTÉ 2FM.

“Thank you to all the producers and BCOs who helped over the years. Thank you to my team for all the support and the laughs. Thanks to Paul Russell and Dan Healy for being so understanding of me needing my family time and for the opportunity to be on 2FM for 10 years. I’m so excited to see what happens next with the station … I will be tuning in for sure.”

Head of RTÉ 2FM Dan Healy said: “After an amazing 10 years on 2FM, Jen has decided to leave the station. Funny, bold, and brave, Jen has been front and centre of 2FM from The Breakfast Republic Show to her brilliant own Jennifer Zamparelli Show. In February 2014, 2FM changed direction to appeal to younger audiences and Jen was key to achieving our goal. I want to thank her deeply for her energy and commitment to 2FM. It has been a privilege to work with such an amazingly talented person. I wish Jen, Lau and their gang all the best for the future and will cheer for Jen loudly in the next phase of her sparkling career”.

Dan continued: “Also, a big thanks to the producers who worked with Jen over the years – Dave Sherry on Breakfast Republic and Kate Proctor, Eithne Kelly, Anita Ward and Jon Jon Mehigan on The Jen Zamparelli Show and of course the rest of our colleagues who worked so hard on the shows.”

– All candidates invited to debate live on the night

As part of RTÉ’s extensive coverage in the run up to the elections on Friday 7th June, Upfront with Katie Hannon will broadcast live from Limerick ahead of the historical election to select Ireland’s first directly elected mayor, with a special TV debate this Monday, 27 May, on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.

RTÉ  is inviting all 15 candidates to participate on stage in one of two panel debates during the broadcast, from the Lime Tree Theatre on the campus of Mary Immaculate College in a specially extended programme.

RTÉ’s initial planned programme format included an on-stage panel of eight candidates who qualified for the debate under the RTÉ television debate criteria, with the remaining seven candidates offered a place in the audience from where they could make a one minute election pitch to voters.

Following the declaration last weekend of the final list of candidates for the Limerick Mayoral Election, the RTÉ Election Steering Group has been reviewing the format of the television debate on Upfront With Katie Hannon.

Taking account of the unique and historical nature of this election, the fact there are just 15 declared candidates, and the flexibility for wider participation the theatre venue provides, additional broadcast time has been allocated for a specially extended programme.

RTÉ believes that viewers will be best served by the programme having two separate panels to ensure that the debates are as coherent and informative as possible.

Monday night’s programme will see the eight candidates who qualified under the RTÉ election TV debate criteria participate in part one of the programme. The remaining seven candidates are now being invited to debate in part two of the programme.

As the city and county of Limerick will vote to directly elect a Mayor for the first time in the history of the state, the programme will look to explore what this will mean for the people of Limerick, and could this unique election transform local democracy across the country?

In the final episode of this series, Upfront with Katie Hannon will continue its audience driven format and candidates in the upcoming election will answer questions submitted from the general public.

RTÉ returns to the Phoenix Park for Bloom by Bord Bia this June Bank Holiday Weekend, bringing great music, chat, live shows from RTÉ lyric fm favourites, magic and fun from RTÉjr, Countrywide live, regular live RTÉ Weather updates, and much more. RTÉ has something for everyone, from the young to the not so young at Bord Bia Bloom from Thursday 30th May – Monday 3rd June.

Marty Whelan will kick off RTÉ’s full five-day schedule at 10.00am on Thursday 30th May with great live music, chat and special guests from 10.00am-12.00 noon. Join Marty for chats with some of the garden designers taking part in this year’s festival, live music from Connor McKeon and his Big Band, and top tips for summer dining from chef, Neven Maguire. And there will be occasional dad jokes. For updates, tune into Marty in the Morning on RTÉ lyric fm in the lead up to Bord Bia Bloom, weekdays 7:00am – 10:00am.

On Friday, Niall Carroll is live with his regular show Classical Daytime from 10.00am – 1.00pm, playing music from the heart of the classical repertoire with Sounds on Screen, a piece from either the big or the small screen at 11.00am, and at midday a piece from Antonio Vivaldi to wrap up his five selections for the week .If you’re interested in garden-design, growing your own fruit and vegetables or you simply enjoy the lure of the soil then join Lorcan Murray live from Bord Bia Bloom from 1.00pm – 4.00pm with music, chat and green-fingered guests. Lorcan will bring a bright and blossoming playlist for the event and some uplifting live musical performances.

You can enjoy Saturday afternoon in the company of Simon Delaney from 1.00pm – 3.00pm when he will be celebrating Ireland’s festival of flowers, food and fun. Fans of Simon’s Sunday afternoon show can expect the same mix of easy chat, good humour and great jazz as we join him in the perfect outdoor setting. We’ll also enjoy stage and screen favourites performed onstage by Cormac Kenevey and The Velvet Lounge Band. Evelyn Grant is live from 3.00pm – 6.00pm bringing a bouquet of the best music for your weekend. Whether you’re catching up on the gardening or out getting some fresh air, tune in to Weekend Drive for beautiful music and new releases, as well as news and weather updates.

And there’s more. Liz Nolan has created a special hour-long programme, Walk in Beauty, that visitors can access on rte.ie and the RTÉ Radio Player via a unique QR code on site. Then they can pop on their headphones and listen to classical music as they take in everything Bord Bia Bloom has to offer.

RTÉ Radio 1 will be there with Countrywide, presented by Philip Boucher-Hayes, will broadcast live on Saturday 1st June 08:10am– 09:00am.

Marty Morrissey and Áine Lawlor will also be back on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player with Bloom, capturing the fun and colour of the June bank holiday weekend at Bord Bia Bloom.

RTÉjr and RTÉ Kids will also feature across the weekend’s schedule at the Budding Bloomers Stage, as RTÉjr presents Let’s Find Out and Joe the Magician. The stars of RTEJr’s Let’s Find Out are leaving their spaceship at 12.15pm and 3.15pm on Saturday 1st June and taking to the stage at Bloom for a fun-filled show, packed with thrills and hopefully not too many spills! Join Captain Zoom and her crewmates, scientists Mark Langtry and Amy Hassett for some super science demonstrations and experiments.

Elsewhere, on Sunday and Monday, popular professional magician, Joe Daly (also known as the “Magical Delivery Man” in RTÉjr kids’ TV show Dizzy Deliveries) will perform his spellbinding children’s comedy interactive magic and illusion show – a family show suitable for all ages that will have you laughing one minute and in complete awe the next.

HOME IS WHERE THE STORY BEGINS
RTÉ launches a series of Animated Shorts on the theme of Home

Among these short animations is Envelope (Distillery Films), looking at the draw of a home and how grandparents can be an anchor to the feeling of home, no matter how far away.

Home is also about reinterpreting what makes up a family, perhaps after a loss or separation. Drawn Together (Cardel) looks at the bonds between a father and a son and how they come to make their house a home.

The infamous Dublin seagulls take centre stage in Homebird (Pink Kong), a comedic look at how home can be wherever you are loved and appreciated.

Suzanne Kelly, Head of Children’s & Young People’s Content, RTÉ, said: “RTÉjr animated shorts scheme is back for 2024, and this time around we are exploring the theme of HOME, a very timely and poignant theme that lends itself wonderfully to creative interpretation. This is the fifth iteration of our animated shorts scheme and RTÉjr are once again delighted to be able to support emerging animation directors and creators, which is at the very core of this scheme. 

This year there are six two-minute animated films that have emerged from a really competitive process and they all deliver such touching, heartfelt films, I urge everyone young and old to seek them out across RTÉjr and the RTÉ Player. The animation industry in Ireland is world renowned and it is a privilege that RTÉjr can play its part in bringing these wonderful films to a wider audience.”

Director BIO  

Cora McKenna is an Irish Animator, Director and Filmmaker originally from Castlecomer, County Kilkenny. After graduating from The Animation Workshop in Denmark in 2020, her graduate film Shergar went on to gain numerous awards and nominations, from the Dingle Animation Film Festival here in Ireland to Student BAFTAs in LA. Since then, Cora has worked on productions such as Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers and Adult Swim’s Primal. In 2022, Cora joined Studio Meala as a Director, and is currently directing their exciting new series Doodle Girl as well as several other upcoming projects.

The Mighty Oak (Adventureverse) – From the heart of the forest to the edge of civilisation, a young oak’s journey redefines ‘home’ in a constantly evolving world.

Director BIO 

Dave Minogue is a Creative Producer and Director, making his short film directorial debut with The Mighty Oak for RTÉjr. Dave is best known for his indie comedy-drama feature film Poster Boys, which he wrote, directed and produced. The film saw international release and was notably acquired by Sky Cinema in the UK & Ireland and Peacock in the US. Holding a postgraduate degree in Advanced Producing from TUD Dublin and a certificate in Metaverse Storytelling from the Creative Futures Academy/IADT, Dave continues to pursue innovative projects. As the Creative Director at Adventurverse Studio, his development of multimedia properties and animation pipelines has earned him a nomination for innovation at the Irish Animation Awards 2023.

Dembaya (JAM) – Forced to flee their African village due to war, a young girl and her family seek refuge in Ireland. As they rebuild their lives, they discover that home is not just a place, but a feeling they create together.

Director BIO 

Borja Espana Guillot, Art Director/ Development Creative, will be 20 years with JAM Media in 2024. He is currently working on JAM’s BeddyByes CGI production for BBC/RTÉ where he is responsible for overseeing conceptual ideas to final design. Borja has worked as Art Director for numerous JAM Media productions like Zig and Zag, Little Roy, Jessy and Nessy and Nova Jones. In 2006, he co-created the CBBC commissioned, award winning series Funky Fables, and acted as script writer and art director on the series. In 2009, he started developing the whole design for the CBBC-commissioned hit series Baby Jake, which utilised photographic digital painting for its original look. He headed a team of artists for two seasons, working as art director. He studied fine arts in Valencia, Athens and Australia, and worked on the animated feature El Cid, before moving to Ireland in 2004. On arrival in Dublin, Borja began working with JAM Media as an animator on the children’s series PICME. In 2011, Borja worked closely with children’s book artist Polly Dunbar to adapt her book series Tilly and Friends into an animation series commissioned by CBBC and Aardman. He successfully adapted the traditional books using a modern digital pipeline, and today continues in his roles as Art Director, Development Creative and Conceptual Artist with JAM Media.

Envelope (Distillery Fiction) – The exchange of handwritten letters between characters, with one writer seeking connection at home and another searching for their own place to call home.

Director BIO 

Kayvon Darabi-Fard is a County Kilkenny based Director and Senior Story Artist. He has worked aboard many productions with studios such as Aardman, Boulder Media, Cartoon Saloon, Disney and Blackstaff Games. Originally from London, England, Kayvon grew up in Bredbury, Stockport in Greater Manchester, eventually settling in Ireland in 2013. Kayvon was Storyboard Supervisor on Elk Studio’s short film The Last Set (2023) and was awarded the Manchester Animation Festival 2023 industry excellence award for his storyboard work on Cartoon Saloon’s / Netflix’s animated feature film, My Father’s Dragon (2022).

Drawn Together (Cardel) – After moving into a pristine new house, James, a young single father and his shy, creative son, Tom, clash when his artistic expressions disrupt the immaculate environment of their new home. But will their conflicting natures drive them apart or draw them together?

Director BIO 

Domhnall Cotter is a young filmmaker based in Dublin, Ireland. He is currently studying in the national Film and Television School in IADT and is set to graduate in 2024. He has primarily directed short fiction, both animated and live action, as well as documentary projects, with many of them screening in festivals internationally.

Homebird (Pink Kong Studios) – The touching reunions Steo witnesses on the tarmac of Dublin’s busiest avian airport give him an epiphany … maybe he should leave too and get a real homecoming when he comes back!

Director BIO 

Aoífe Doyle is the chief creative officer and co-founder of Dublin’s award-winning Pink Kong Studios. Aoífe’s background in classical animation led her to work for over a decade in Ireland’s booming animation sector before co-founding Pink Kong Studios. Winner of Young Director of the Year 2018 (ICAD), Aoífe has written and directed several award-winning shorts including Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) nominated short Departure (2017). Her latest TV series Urban Tails (RTÉ – Ireland, Azoomee – UK, Curious World – USA, tvokids – Canada, Curious World HMH – USA, Kidoodle TV – USA, Multichoice – South Africa and more) sees Aoífe direct and write 52 episodes of fun and factual content for kids to enjoy and sing along to about urban animals in their cities. Her film AURORA sees Aoífe move into the world of virtual reality. The film is Ireland’s first original animated VR film and received a phenomenal response from festival goers. Aoife’s most recent director credits include: Homebird, 2024 (RTÉ) Urban Tails, Season 2 (2023, RTÉ television series) Urban Tails, Season 1 (2019, RTÉ television series) AURORA (2018, ADIFF VR short) Ireland’s first original animated VR short, Departure (2017, Irish Film Board, IFTA-nominated short film) and Ends Meet (2017, RTÉ television series).

RTÉ 2FM today announced that the Drive It with The 2 Johnnies is to come to an end on 31 May.

Head of RTÉ 2Fm, Dan Healy said: “After two very successful years, The 2 Johnnies are leaving 2FM. Johnny B and Johnny Smacks have brought their original South Tipp humour and interesting music choices to 2FM audiences right across Ireland. The listenership for the drivetime show has been very strong from the very start and the most recent listenership results continued that trend. They’ve been a great part of the 2FM family here and we’ll be sad to see them go but wish them well as they continue their adventures”.

Johnny Smacks said, “We’ve had unreal craic over the last two and half years working on 2FM. We came in with the idea to have a laugh on the afternoons and cheer people up and get more mad scones on the radio from every county in Ireland telling stories and auld yarns. After two and a half years my jaws need a rest from all the laughing. Thank you to our unbelievable team who backed us and brought our crazy ideas to life with us, to our brother Aindriú de Paor, our producers/mammies Anita and Caroline and to our on-air sister Aifric O’Connell, the show wouldn’t be what it is without you thank you so much. And the biggest thank you of all is for you the listeners, the show was all about ye, ye made it what it was. So, to Bob in Waterford, geezer John, Mouse and the lads, Pip in Toronto and all our listeners, thanks for laughing along with us. There’s great people working in 2FM and we wish them all the success in the world. Who knows, we may be back on the radio someday, but for now as we say on the show… We’re out the gap!”.

The Parish Quiz has thrown up some wild characters, we’ve tried to reach every inch of the island of Ireland. We’ll keep the mixer going and the ball pucked out”.

Dan Healy continued: “I want to acknowledge the great content created on the drivetime show by Aifric O’Connell, Aindriú De Paor and Emma Power who shared the airwaves with The 2 Johnnies over the period. RTÈ 2FM will announce its summer schedule in the coming weeks.

As part of RTÉ’s extensive coverage in the run up to the European Parliament Elections on Friday 7th June, Upfront with Katie Hannon will hold the first major TV debate this Monday night on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.

The live programme will focus on the Midlands North-West constituency with presenter Katie Hannon at the helm beginning at 10.35pm.

With over twenty candidates in each constituency and more than seventy across the three European constituencies, when inviting candidates to participate RTÉ set impartial and objective criteria across all three debates to ensure they are as informative and coherent as possible to best serve the audience.  The criteria will see a maximum of eight candidates in each of the above television debates.

This Monday night’s RTÉ One programme will see the following candidates join Katie Hannon live in studio:

• Luke Ming Flanagan – Independent
• Saoirse McHugh – Independent

Ahead of the first major TV debate, presenter Katie Hannon said: “These European Elections are coming at a volatile time in national and international politics. The EU plays a key role in the defining issues of these turbulent times, from migration and the rise of the far right, to the response to Ukraine and Gaza, to climate change and the future of agriculture. I’m looking forward to a lively debate.”

This Monday night is the first of three major live television debates RTÉ will host on the European Elections across three consecutive weeks in the lead up to polling day. On Thursday 30th May, a Prime Time Election Debate special will focus on the Ireland South constituency. The final of RTÉ’s major TV debate of the campaign will see candidates in the Dublin constituency feature on a  Prime Time Election Debate on Tuesday 4th June.

In addition, RTÉ will broadcast a live TV special from Limerick for the first ever Mayoral Election. Upfront with Katie Hannon will be broadcast live on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player, on Monday 27 May.

RTÉ has today announced that Operation Transformation (OT) is to end after 17 seasons. As series come to an end each year, RTÉ undertakes an editorial review to ensure the audience is being best served and to refresh and renew its slate of programming. The decision on Operation Transformation was communicated some weeks ago to those involved including the experts and stakeholders.

The series, which kicked off in 2008, initially saw presenter Gerry Ryan select hopefuls on his RTÉ 2FM radio show, following them as they attempted to reshape and reboot their lives, guided by experts in the fields of nutrition, weight loss and psychology. Kathryn Thomas has been presenting the series since 2012, and has made the show her own with her empathetic and motivational style.

Over the course of the series there have been dozens of leaders from all over Ireland, bidding to improve their health and wellbeing and checking in on a weekly basis with the panel of experts, and inspiring thousands of viewers at home to follow their lead and their plans.

The series evolved considerably over the years with recent series encompassing a more holistic approach to adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle as well as losing weight.  In recent series, leaders underwent a weekly health check-in where various additional health indicators were monitored including Upper Body Strength, Balance, Lower Body Strength and Cardiovascular as well as Hydration, Blood Pressure, Metabolic Age, Weight, General Health, Nutrition, and Movement.

The final series of the show, which aired earlier this year, featured leaders Michelle Rogan, Darragh Fitzgerald, Anne Cushen, Noel O’Connell, and Edel O’Malley. The leaders were ably assisted by clinical psychologist Dr. Eddie Murphy,  Coru Registered Dietician Sophie Pratt, general practitioner Dr Sumi Dunne and fitness expert Karl Henry.

Grainne McAleer, Commissioning Editor, RTÉ, said: “We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all of the leaders who have participated in the series over the past 17 seasons and to the public who engaged with the series in huge numbers across Ireland. We are proud of the positive impact the show has had on individuals and communities across the country, but feel it’s time to refresh and renew our offering to the audience. 
 
I’d also like to thank the experts, past and present, who have been so dedicated to Operation Transformation and to guiding participants on their wellness journey. I’d particularly like to pay tribute to Kathryn Thomas who took up the reins from Gerry Ryan and really made the show her own. Her empathy for the leaders and her commitment to the show really connected with audiences. RTÉ have a number of exciting projects fronted by Kathryn in development at the moment and look forward to bringing them to audiences in the near future.”

Grainne continued: “Finally, a big thank you to VIP Productions and Philip Kampff who have steered this very big ship so well over the past seventeen years and all the production staff and many crew who travelled the length and breadth of the country for OT.”.

To be able to shine a national spotlight on the importance of looking after our health through our amazing leaders, ordinary people living ordinary lives, who opened up their  hearts and homes in the most extraordinary ways. Every single one of you inspired me. And I learnt so much from all our incredible experts down through the years too. It’s been one hell of a journey! 

I know there will be so many people who will miss OT when January rolls around. I will too!! But keep the momentum going in your communities, your GAA clubs, your local Park Runs, That is where the support is when you need it. I, for one, will continue to vocalise the importance of prioritising health  wherever I can too. Thank you to RTÉ for trusting me at the helm for all these years and I look forward to the exciting new projects ahead in 2025″.

Since this time last year, 53,000 additional listeners are tuning into RTÉ Radio 1 across the week, weekly listenership to RTÉ 2FM has increased by 77,000, and RTÉ lyric FM – which recently celebrated its 25^th Anniversary – has an additional 22,000 listeners based on this time last year.

RTÉ radio services are a trusted source for news, sport, entertainment and music across Ireland, and the result of ongoing hard work and dedication of the radio production teams at RTÉ. As the media landscape continues to evolve, radio is steadfast in connecting with Irish audiences at home and abroad.”

• Tracy Clifford has 121,000 listeners enjoying great music each lunchtime (+8,000 BoB).
• Drive It with The 2 Johnnies continues to entertain listeners across the country in the afternoons with 151,000 listeners (+1,000 BoB).

• Aedín Gormley’s Movies and Musicals every Saturday afternoon has 58,000 listeners (+4,000)
• Evonne Ferguson’s Daybreak has 43,000 listeners (+6,000 BoB) on Saturday mornings.
• The Hamilton Scores with George Hamilton has 44,000 listeners on both Saturdays and Sundays.
• Sunday Afternoon with Simon Delaney/Seán Rocks on Sunday have 50,000 listeners (+8,000 BoB)
• Opera Night with Paul Herriott enjoys 33,000 listeners (+4,000 BoB and +14,000 YoY)

Cruinniú na nÓg 2024: Saturday, 15th June 2024

• Creative Ireland launches Cruinniú na nÓg 2024 with the young rappers, circus performers and artists.
• Cruinniú na nÓg will be on Saturday 15th June 2024
• Programme includes events for children and young people across the island of Ireland
• A comprehensive programme of events for older teens will be held around the country, supported by the Late Night Economy Unit
• TG4 will host Amuigh 24 , an outdoor family festival of young creativity as Gaeilge, in the heart of Connemara.

Yesterday at Fernhill House and Gardens, Dublin, Creative Ireland announced details of Cruinniú na nÓg 2024, a day of free creative activity for young people. This year Cruinniú na nÓg will take place on Saturday 15^th June and will feature more than 1000 free creative activities for children and young people throughout the island. The theme this year is Dare to Create and Creative Ireland is calling on all young people to get creative, try something new and show off their skills.

The launch event was marked by an energetic performance of the RAP Found my Spark led by GMC Beats ambassadors MC Tiny (15) and Lil’Sophia (11) with support from the young rappers of the Southside Traveller’s Action Group. Also at Fernhill was Taiguara Murphy Barbosa Pereira (13) and Charley-Rose Aston (13) ambassadors for Irish Street Theatre and Spectacle, Joe Ó Curraín (9) TG4 and RTÉ’s This is Art 2023 winners Zihan He (15) and Maimoonah Syed (7). Cruinniú na Óg 2024 will host hundreds of free creative events for young people, including an aerial arts programme for deaf youth in Dublin, all the craic agus ceol of a Rambling House performance in County Clare, an Eras dance party in Waterford, a Battle of the Bands in Cloughjordan, Tipperary, pottery classes in Leitrim, family art exchanges between Mayo and Armagh, heritage stone mason and gilding classes in Offaly and so much more.

For the first time, the programme will include a series of late night events for young people. Cruinniú Late includes a play created and performed within 24 hours in the crypt of the Waterford Museum, a Rocky Horror Picture Show screening and dance off in Limerick, silent discos in Dun Laoghaire and Offaly, and an open mic night at the comedy club in South Dublin.

As part of the Shared Island-dimension of the Creative Ireland Programme, events are scheduled which will bring communities together across the island. These include a Deep Dive Game Jam where young people from Wexford and Belfast will join together to explore the shared environmental issues, Convergence will explore the importance of cultural connection, diversity and pride of place in Derry and Tallaght and there will be twinning events between youth centres in Belfast and Dublin.

Cruinniú na nÓg 2024 is a collaboration between the Creative Ireland Programme, the 31 local authorities in Ireland and RTÉ.

Announcing Cruinniú na nÓg 2024, Minister Martin said:

“This year Cruinniú na Óg is everywhere, and all at once! I am delighted that we have been able to launch Cruinniú Late this year which is in direct response to requests from young people to provide authentic, alcohol-free spaces in which young people can perform. With this mind, I want to congratulate our partners in the local authorities who devised over 31 great events for 14-18 year olds. Also, I’m delighted that Cruinniú na nÓg will feature events across the four corners of the island building on the inaugural all-island programming in 2023. In the spirit of the Shared Island initiative, we continue to promote cross-community creative opportunities for children young people to engage in creative activities while building new relationships and bringing communities together”

The Creative Ireland Programme and its strategic partners have developed a number of creative projects, all planned to go live on Saturday 15 June 2024.

These include

• Irish Street Arts, Circus and Spectacle Network (ISACS) will host 16 events around the country for young people who want to try their hand at circus skills and street spectacle.
• Rhyme Island – This year, Creative Ireland is teaming up with GMC Beats to get every young person in Ireland rapping. In preparation, the Rhyme Island team have been travelling the length and breadth of the country holding a series of online and in-person workshops, which will culminate in a massive day of rap back at the GMC Beats headquarters in Knocknaheeney, Cork.
• TG4 will host Amuigh 24 in the grounds of their Connemara studio in Baile na hAbhann, County Galway with support from the Gaeltacht division of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. This day long festival will feature bands, graffiti painting, d-jing workshops, Children’s Books Ireland, crafting and so much more, with young people from every Gaeltacht region in the country participating.
• This is Art 2024 – The theme for Creative Ireland and RTÉ’s wonderful art competition for young people will be announced on the day of Cruinniú na Óg and the competition will be open from September for entries.
