In particular the growth is reflected in afternoon gains with an increase of 6,000 listeners for Lorcan Murray’s Classic Drive and a 2,000 listener increase for Liz Nolan’s The Full Score/ Aedín in the Afternoon programmes. Retaining growth in the 35 – 54 agegroup of listeners who have come to us over the last year confirms how new programmes such as Aedín in the Afternoon, Ambient Orbit and Séan Rocks on Sunday on RTÉ lyric fm are appealing to these new audiences. The 6,000 listener increase in Opera Night highlights the appetite for opera and classical music and reinforces RTÉ lyric fm’s place in the lives of Irish audiences.”

Statement from Kevin Bakhurst, Director-General RTÉ re. Ryan Tubridy

Kevin Bakhurst has this evening confirmed that RTÉ has concluded negotiations with Ryan Tubridy.

Speaking this evening, Kevin said: “We went into negotiations with Ryan in good faith and in the hopes of reaching an agreement that would see Ryan return to his RTÉ Radio 1 show. I have decided not to continue with negotiations and, as such, there are no plans for Ryan to return to his presenting role with RTÉ at this time.

Despite having agreed some of the fundamentals, including fee, duration and hours, regretfully, it is my view that trust between the parties has broken down. Public statements made without consultation appear to question the basis for the necessary restatement of fees paid for services for 2020 and 2021.

As I set about a programme of recovery from this crisis, it is imperative that all parties are aligned in one key respect: the misstatement of fees should never have happened; and the correct re-statement of those fees is accepted by all.

I have been clear since I took up the role of Director-General of RTÉ that I am absolutely committed to restoring trust in this organisation following a shameful period in our history. To achieve this, and fully draw a line between our recent past and present, we must acknowledge and accept the issues that have arisen.

Who knows what the future holds, but for now I am concluding the negotiation with Ryan, and focusing on delivering a range of important changes to the operation and culture of this organisation as part of the essential work to restore trust in RTÉ.”

Produced by documentary makers David Coughlan and Donal O’Herlihy, music enthusiasts and history buffs alike will be captivated by the anecdotes and perspectives shared in this unique documentary. It’s a look into a tour that involved paramilitarism, politics, emigration, unemployment and the soundtrack to a generation as the iconic Mancunian-Irish band pitched up in Ireland for nine gigs in ten chaotic days at the height of the Troubles. On October 12, 1984, the IRA blew up a section of the Grand Hotel in Brighton, narrowly missing British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. RTÉ Board Publishes Second Report by Grant Thornton

RTÉ Board Publishes Second Report by Grant Thornton

Report Identifies Flaws in Procedure and Failures in Governance

Wednesday 16th August – The RTÉ Board has today published phase two of the second report by Grant Thornton, commissioned by the Audit and Risk Committee to examine issues surrounding the public disclosure of earnings by Mr. Ryan Tubridy.

The Board of RTE is releasing the full report subject to minor redactions for anonymity purposes in relation to more junior staff.

Read the Report here.

The Report confirms that 2017-2019 earning figures for Mr. Tubridy were publicly understated due to adjustments made by RTÉ’s financial department.

The Report confirms that the Board of RTÉ was correct in restating Mr Tubridy’s publicly disclosed earnings for the period between 2017 and 2019.

The Report makes clear that neither Mr. Tubridy nor NK Management had any involvement in the adjustments for the period 2017 – 2019.

The Report confirms that while the earnings were publicly understated, there was no impact on RTÉ’s financial statements as a result of these adjustments.

The Report suggests a hypothesis that on the balance of probabilities adjustments were made for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019 in order to allow for ‘revised earnings’ below a figure of €500,000 in each year.

The Report highlights poor governance including significant deficiencies in internal management controls, failures in the finance function, and a lack of communication from the Executive to the Board.

The Chair of RTÉ, Siún Ní Raghallaigh, stated: “Regrettably this Report confirms our view of the siloed management culture that has prevailed in RTÉ and supports the decision by the Board to initiate an ongoing programme of corrective action.

The Report paints a picture of poor internal communication and weak processes.

The Report identifies specific dates whereby errors could have been corrected but were not and key documents that could have been effectively interrogated but were not.

It is also clear from the Report that the then Executive did not properly engage with the Board on these matters, nor was relevant information provided to the Board by the Executive or by the auditors.

We will be taking on board the issues raised by the Report and will be engaging with RTÉ’s auditors, Deloitte, to discuss the contents of same.

Steps have been taken to ensure there can be no repeat of these failures. Working with Director General Kevin Bakhurst, the Board of RTÉ remains committed to an ongoing programme of reform and recovery for the organisation. I hope that the publication of this Report represents an important staging point in RTÉ’s rebuilding of trust with the public and stakeholders.”
