The award-winning Irish actress Charlene McKenna (Bloodlands, Peaky Blinders, Vienna Blood) stars in the lead role as Shelly Mohan, a housewife, mother of three, married to a Garda detective, who kills her former partner in crime when he threatens to expose her dark past. With her unsuspecting husband hunting for the killer, Shelly must cope with pressures of the tightening noose as well as continue caring for an ailing son, her unfaithful husband and all usual burdens of motherhood.  Inspired by true events, it is a compelling and relentless story of mothering and the price paid for long-buried sins. Cork Food Truck “Spice Genie” wins RTÉ Player’s “Battle of the Food Trucks”

This summer six of the country’s top food trucks went head-to-head in an intense culinary competition in search of the chef who could handle the heat and create the best eating experience to win the ultimate prize of €5,000.

Christopher Braganza who runs the Spice Genie food truck from his Cork base has been selected as this year’s winner of Battle of the Food Trucks.  Christopher is originally from India and moved to Ireland in 2012. He makes home cooked authentic Indian food.

Chris said, “Winning this title really means the world to me. First of all I’m representing Goa, my family, India, Cork, my suppliers and my customers and everybody has been a part of this journey. I really thank everybody who’s been there through the ups and downs – through bad weather and good weather they always show up and encourage me to do what I love the most! It really means a lot to me – I’m honoured.”

Runner up Scott Holder of Los Chicanos said: “I’m delighted for Christopher – we both cooked our hearts you know, he obviously pulled out some amazing food. To be honest with you I just wanted to get to the final because I wanted to put all those dishes out in front of the judges. I’ve done that, they loved them, it was an adventure with twists and turns and I met a lot of cool people.”

Battle of the Food Trucks host with the most James Patrice said, “Well, what a series it’s been this year on Battle Of The Food Trucks! Each of our chefs were utterly outstanding in their talent, passion and sensational skills – not to mention the fact that they were all mighty craic! The finale was the definition of a nail biter (I’m flat out on the manicures since) and to see the culmination of Scott and Christopher’s journeys in such a feast of fabulous food was an absolute joy. All hail King Chris and his incredible Spice Genie food truck! We’ve had amazing feedback from audiences and on social media, which further proves that Ireland’s love for food trucks is only getting bigger and better. Sure we’re full of notions altogether! Of course, Justine and I still can’t fry an egg to save our lives but look – we’ll keep her lit!”

Co-host and comedian Justine Stafford said, “Huge congrats to Chris on winning the competition. Chris and his food were trucking amazing! I can’t wait to visit his truck in Cork and inhale every dish on the menu. He was a spice genie and a gent and I’m not saying it helped his luck, but he also had one of the best novelty sock ranges of any contestant… Either way he cooked his socks off and we are delighted to see where he and his truck go next!”

Chris and the other food truck owners were put through their culinary paces by judges Eric Matthews and Gráinne Mullins over the course of six episodes. Some of the challenges included creating their competitors signature dish, creating a delicious dish from a mystery box of ingredients and a blind taste challenge.

Judge Eric Matthews (who has over 17 years’ experience working in Michelin starred restaurants around the globe and was former Head Chef at Dublin’s famous Chapter One Restaurant) and award-winning pastry chef Gráinne Mullins of Grá Chocolates crowned Chris the winner of this year’s series.

All episodes of series 2 of Battle of the Food Trucks, are now available to binge watch on the RTÉ Player – word of the wise though – don’t watch it while you’re hungry! (Unless you live near a food truck and can satisfy your cravings!)

Dee Forbes, Director-General RTÉ, said: “While 2021 was different to 2020, many of the challenges remained. However, across the year and across our services, RTÉ created work of high public value in news, investigative reporting, arts and cultural experiences, live sport, original drama, entertainment and children’s programming. I am proud of what we achieved and that 92% of the population use one or more RTÉ services each week, making RTÉ one of the most relied upon public services in the country. I am particularly pleased that RTÉ has increased our audience share among hard-to-reach younger audiences, with growth in 25–44-year-olds accessing our programming and services over the past two years.

Big events returned and made 2021 a memorable year for Irish sport. RTÉ’s role in uniting the country for national moments was to the fore as audiences tuned in to RTÉ in great numbers across television, radio, online and social media to follow our coverage of the Olympics and Paralympics, the Euros, and the GAA Hurling, Football and Camogie Finals. 2021 also saw the new United Rugby Championship on RTÉ as part of a new broadcasting partnership with TG4. This level of engagement, and national celebration, would not be possible without these events being made available on a free-to-air basis.

Last year again highlighted the important role that RTÉ plays in helping to connect the Irish public with those who are in need, through a range of inspiring fundraising initiatives, not least the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal which raised over €6.6million for children’s charities and was one of the more uplifting elements in a year that was so difficult for many.  As I look back on these past two years, I have never been more convinced of the need and role of public service broadcasting in creating a shared space, for important discussion and debate, for celebration, and for telling national stories. RTÉ services remain relevant, trusted and compelling. They are enjoyed by many, and RTÉ continues to play an important role in enhancing Irish life. In spite of this, TV Licence revenue declined in 2020.

The decision by Government last week to align the obligation to pay the TV Licence with how people consume media today is critical to ensure the sustainability of the system into the future. As I said last Tuesday, RTÉ will continue to do everything in its power to deliver a national public service media to be proud; but implementing essential Licence Fee reform is vital to address persistent financial instability.”

Moya Doherty, Chair of the RTÉ Board, commented: “I am proud of the leadership role RTÉ has continued to play in the provision of high-quality news and current affairs throughout the past two years. The continued public appetite for vital news and information, for discussion and debate, for entertainment, and even for companionship, meant that in 2021 RTÉ remained a constant in the lives of so many. While we began the year with much uncertainty, RTÉ ended the year as home to 44 of the 50 most-watched TV programmes in Ireland, reinforcing once more the truth that in times of uncertainty audiences turn to their national public media in large numbers for its unique offering of live sport, trusted news and current affairs, local Irish drama, gripping factual programmes and documentaries, as well as entertainment. RTÉ radio also continued to keep listeners engaged on air and online, throughout the day, and across the week reaching almost 2 million radio listeners in Ireland, while we also saw more online audio streams of our radio stations, more RTÉ Player streams, more visitors to and greater usage of the RTÉ News app. I am proud of this performance and the vital role played by RTÉ during a difficult year which was meticulously planned to ensure the health and safety of all and the delivery of vital services to the public. That RTÉ has managed to do this and return a modest surplus for the year is a substantial achievement in such uncertain and challenging times.

Moya Doherty continued: “As Ireland’s national public service broadcaster, RTÉ must be able to articulate and represent the social, cultural and economic realities of its citizens while defending democratic process when it is under challenge and it can only do that if it has assured and independent funding mechanisms in place with a foundation on which to deliver future media services and programming.  While the Government decision to move to link the licence fee to how media is now consumed is welcome, how that is implemented and how quickly is more critical than ever.”

The Kinsellas are back! BRON Studios, the award-winning media tech company, and Headline Pictures, announced today the second season of Kin began production in Dublin last week. The new series of the gripping drama Kin will be broadcast on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player next year. The 8-episode 1-hour crime drama has enjoyed success with international critical acclaim and huge ratings in key markets.

Returning cast includes Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Clare Dunne (Herself), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones), Sam Keeley (Joe vs Carole), Emmett J. Scanlan (Peaky Blinders), Maria Doyle Kennedy (Outlander), and Yasmin Seky. Francis Magee has been upped to series regular this season.

The new season will see the Kinsellas as the top dogs in Dublin but killing Eamon Cunningham having created as many problems as it solved. They have incurred the wrath of an enemy even more dangerous than him. And where once there were unbreakable bonds of blood and family, now there is only suspicion, distrust, and resentment. But the greatest threat to the family emerges from within- in the shape of a ruthless, bullying, agent of chaos. Fortunately, from positions of great adversity the boldest plans are often forged. And so it is with the Kinsellas.

Kin is produced by BRON Studios and Headline Pictures, in association with RTÉ, with support by Screen Ireland. Peter McKenna (The Last Kingdom, Red Rock) is the series showrunner/executive producer, writer, and creator. Episodic directors are Felix Thompson (The Letter for the King), directing partners Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor (Helen), and Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother).

Gilbert (Bombshell, Joker, Fences), Headline Pictures’ Christian Baute (Ten Percent, Man in the High Castle), Laurence Lenica and Franck Calderon, and Ciarán Donnelly (Wheel of Time) who is also the co-creator. James Flynn (Vikings, Into the Badlands) is producing through his Metropolitan Films banner, with Emma Fleischer on as supervising producer and Gemma O’Shaugnessy as line producer. Dermot Horan and David Crean are Executive Producers for RTÉ and Andrew Byrne Executive Producer for Screen Ireland,
